About the Project

Kicking off on the VeryAltF tour of ‘08, John Michael and Dalisa Cooper start a Pay-It-Forward project to help photographers get in front of the lens with their families. Something photographers are notorious for not doing. These are their stories.

Conor, Shannon and Savannah Jane

Photos by Kristen Roedner.

My fabulous PIF by Eric Doggett here.

I had the distinct pleasure of photographing Shannon and her precious family at the South Austin fairgrounds in Austin, Texas. We’ve been living in drought conditions for so long that it was hard to wish the dark clouds away. Thankfully, the rain held off and we were able to capture some sparky pieces of magic before the storm hit overnight. Click here to see Shannon’s awesome photography site and click here to see more from our session.

Steve, Sara, Olive, Luke and Yoda

I have not been photographed yet so I am starting this chain of pay it forward.

The original post of this family shoot can be seen here.

Steve and Sara recently welcomed a new addition to their family.  Being photographers themselves I knew it would be virtually impossible for them to get a new family portrait of everyone.  I wanted to pay it forward and give them some new family portraits to cherish.  I had a blast with them.

Sara and Steve were excited to have a family session.  They experienced all the little nerves and gitters experienced by most of our clients.  It was really fun to capture this time in their lives for them.

Katie, Ryan, Harper, & Layne

Photos taken by : Rebekah Hood of Kallima Photography

Photo shoot of Rebekah & Ben Hood (and little baby Josiah still in the womb!) taken by the uber stellar Meggie Velasco, who also shot their wedding back in 2004. See Rebekah & Ben’s Pay it Forward shoot HERE.

The images below are of Katie Hobbie of KT Photography, and her beautiful family (Ryan, Harper, and Layne!)

All images were taken in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Bryan & Heather

Bryan and Heather’s family was photographed by  Meghan Campbell of Soli Photography.

The Campbell’s photos were taken by the fabulous Meggie Velasco. See some of those photos HERE.

Heather of Reminisce Photography has been one of my closest friends for many years now. She inspired me to develop my photography business to what it is today. I can’t talk about what Bryan and Heather’s day jobs consist of, but let’s just say you had better be on your best behavior! They are awesome people….those kind of people that add meaning to your life. It was such a pleasure to photograph them.

Lisa, Cody & Matt

Photographed by Jesus Tirso of Decca Photography

Meet Lisa of www.lisaannphoto.com and her two boys, Cody and Matt

Jesus’ family photographed by Altf

***A little note on this image… this is actually a post by Dalisa who decided to ninja her way into Jesus’ blog and steal this image to post here.  Jesus actually completed and posted his PIF on his blog in a timely and effective manner, but never got around to posting on this site.  So a little help for a very busy photographer.  Be sure to check out Jesus’ blog for more images of this beautiful family.

Anna & Spencer

Meet Anna & Spencer as photographed by Mike & Catherine of In The Moment Photographs

Mike & Catherine’s family was photographed by Oana Hogrefe

We have been friends with Anna & Spencer of Anna & Spencer Photography for a while now and they recently moved back to Atlanta and mentioned they needed some pictures of themselves together, so we were happy to pay it forward with them.  We had a blast and our daughter Emma assisted on the session and captured some great images as well.  You can see more of their session on our blog

Leslie & Kids

Photo by: Erin of Erin Kathleen Photography

Erin’s Family was shot by Jake McKee.  Here’s that gorgeous session.

Funnily enough, Leslie of Leslie Spurlock Photography second shot for me a few times a while ago.  Now, of course, she’s doing amazingly well on her own with beautiful work and tons of destination weddings.  (I’m only a little jealous.  :-)  She knows I love her.  Anyway, Leslie and her three kids picked “Scary Creek Drive” for their session.  Admittedly, not everyone came happily (can you tell?) but we had a blast.  Even Leslie’s 16-year-old daughter tolerated us well enough once she found out that I wasn’t going to make her smile or look at the camera or even stop texting.  Anyway, here’s one of my favorites.

Check out a few more on my blog.

Jason, Marcia, Ryan, and Cooper

Meet the Davis Family as photographed by Wes Hope/Hope Photography.

(And here’s our family thanks to Tara Kneiser, aka Dixie Pixel: The Hopes)

We chose the lovely family of fellow Knoxville area photographer Jason Davis as our Pay It Forward family. We did the session during a beautiful fall afternoon on the campus of Maryville College, in Maryville, Tennessee. A big thanks to my great wife/assistant/boss Danielle for helping get smiles out of the Davis boys. Also to Tara who was nice enough to do our first family session with our new little girl. And of course, David Williams for the inspiration and John and Dalisa for getting this great project going.

Check out more on our blog!

David Williams

The Last Couch..

A clear shiny plastic couch.  I have photographed 37 families on it across the states and now, its last images.

David Williams, the man who inspired me to produce the Roadside Families Project,  stands before the wonderful PVC inflatable.  I’ll digress. While driving across the country last July and August on our VeryAltF Summer tour, we started a “Pay It Forward” project - we photograph a photographer with their family with the conditions that they have to do the same for another photographers family that is willing to pay it forward, eventually creating a dominoe effect.  During our tour, I received an email from David asking if I would photograph him.  One of my role models wants me to photograph him?  I felt excited, honored and a little proud of myself, then the I realized that I would have to photograph “the” David Williams.  That “proud of myself” feeling quickly deflated and slid into nervous anxiety, realizing that I would be photographing not just a photographer but a man that has seen more photography then probably anyone else I know. David, you see, is also a print judge for print competitions for a couple of professional photography associations.

So, the first week of November I flew out to LA, where David was teaching one of his fabulous workshops with plastic sofa in hand.  I set up the shot, the couch, David stands in front of the couch, turns toward the camera and closes his eyes.   I left him to his pose and photographed the image.  His personal objects in the image, a leaf, a band with a heart on his sleeve and a piece of paper or is it a photographed turned in toward his heart to be hidden?  The heart on his sleeve was obvious, and I did not ask the meaning of the leaf or the photograph that he held to his chest, far better to wonder then to know.  What I do know is that in the hi-res version of the file above, I swear I can see the boyish face of his childhood photos that I have viewed in his slide show…..  The plastic couch now in the recycle bin, the image of David concludes my part of the project for Roadside Families (at least for now) and now its time for the project to continue on its own by the families we have photographed and those that they have, and so on…
